Siargao Island – not only a surfers paradise

Experienced Philippine travelers may have heard of Siargao Island in northeastern Mindanao. Tourists and surfers all over the world visit the island. Many daring water athletes compete in the annual international surfing championship here. But this beautiful spot in the Philippines has much more to offer.

More and more travelers are discovering the beautiful islands on island hopping tours. Around Siargao Island, there are several islands such as Guyam island, also called “Hamburger Island” because of its round shape. “Dako Island” and numerous sandbanks with the finest sandy beaches. The starting point of the many island hopping tours is called the village General Luna or “GL”.

Getting to Siargao

Traveling to Siargao Island is mostly done by plane from either Cebu City(Mactan International Airport) or Manila. There are several daily departures from both airports, especially in high season. It is also possible to get a ferry from Surigao City in Mindanao. The ferry connections go several times a day and can be booked spontaneously. Depending on the boat and the waves, the crossing from Surigao City takes about 2-4 hours.

Authentic Islander Life

Siargao will surely reward you with a beautiful scenery, unique flora and fauna and welcoming, friendly locals.
Visit one of the most untouched villages called “Union”. In this village the local islanders live day to day without worrying about everything that happens in the western world. This is the perfect place if you want to get in touch with your inner peace, and away from the fast moving world and everyday stress.

Here, you can really becomes aware of how beautiful and simple life can be. If the inhabitants are not busy fishing or farming the waves on the nearby sea are very inviting to a swim or surf.

If you visit Siargao you should plan about 3-5 days, because there is much to discover. A tour of the island, mangroves, and many more things are waiting to be explored. Siargao is said to have the largest mangrove forest in Mindanao, where allegedly alligators frolic. A trip to the island “Bucas Grande” is also a must.

Siargao Island is unique in many ways like many other Philippine Island, and it deserves to be discovered in the same manner as other popular tourist destinations such as Palawan. The big difference is that there are a lot fewer tourists here, and that’s what we love here at Kapwa Travel, Siargao still has that authentic feel to it.

There are many beautiful types of accommodation on Siargao. It is not always necessary to book your stay in advance, because the island is still not overrun by tourists. However, around the time of the international surf competition in September, everything will be booked, which is why you should pre-book early if you choose to visit Siargao around this time. Excursion to Del Carmen

In the west of Siargao is the small village of Del Carmen (formerly “Numantia”). Where you can make beautiful trips to the mangrove forests. We stayed here in 2010 and were amazed with the white pristine beaches in the area.

We have not seen much to the crocodiles that are supposed to be playing around here. But there were rare birds, a beautiful scenery and absolute quietness.
