July 20, 2023, marked a momentous occasion as the National Museum of the Philippines-Cebu (NMP-Cebu) invited its partners to undergo training (Running a Museum: Guides and Docents Training Program) and acquaint themselves with the wonders that this soon-to-be-opened museum holds. As a regional tour guide, I consider it a great privilege to participate in such an event. The comprehensive 5-day training program covered a diverse range of topics each day, providing us with valuable insights into the museum’s exhibits and their significance.

As we eagerly await the grand opening on August 1, 2023, let us delve into what the National Museum of the Philippines-Cebu has in store for all its visitors. The museum is housed within a magnificent 3-level building, an architectural gem with historical significance. Originally crafted by Architect William Edward Parsons during the American occupation in 1910, the structure seamlessly integrates American-influenced elements with the rich local building traditions of Cebu.

One of the most captivating features of the museum is its use of shell window panels inspired by original Capiz shells. These delicate and intricately designed panels allow soft, pearlescent light to filter into the interiors, creating an enchanting and serene ambiance that enhances the visitor’s experience.

As we stroll through the exteriors of the building, we can’t help but admire the exquisite details adorning its façade. The ornate grille work and metal corbels, embellished with elegant fleur-de-lis motifs, are a testament to Parsons’ visionary design. It’s evident that every aspect of the building was meticulously crafted to create an awe-inspiring structure.

Throughout its illustrious history, the building, known as the Aduana, has served various purposes. It started as a Customs office and later, in 2004, became the official residence of the President in the Visayas. Unfortunately, in 2013, a devastating magnitude 7.2 earthquake caused damage to the Aduana. Fortunately,, through a collaborative effort between the Cebu Port Authority and the National Museum of the Philippines, dedicated preservation and restoration efforts were undertaken to safeguard this esteemed heritage.

Thanks to the brilliant minds and unwavering commitment of those involved in the conservation and preservation project, the National Museum of the Philippines-Cebu has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of the earthquake damage. Now, visitors can revel in the delight of exploring the museum’s various exhibition areas.

Among the treasures housed within the museum are exhibits showcasing different porcelain artifacts excavated from various provinces in Cebu, a herbarium highlighting the rich botanical diversity of the region, a gallery of paintings created by talented Filipino artists, and much more.

The museum stands as a testimony to the rich cultural heritage of Cebu and the Philippines as a whole. Its opening on August 1, 2023, will mark a new chapter in Cebu’s history, offering free admission to all who wish to delve into the nation’s past, be immersed in a captivating journey through time and culture, as this illustrious institution invites visitors to explore the past and embrace the artistic soul of the Philippines. We eagerly await your presence on August 1 at NMP-Cebu, where history will come alive, and the spirit of the Philippines will shine brightly.
