April 26, 2021 was a non-ordinary day for Kapwa Travel and BAKA-C (short for Batan-on Alang sa Kalambuan sa Cordova) – It was the day we launched a community-based environmental project called “Basura Mo – Shoot Mo Project!”.

Four (4) trash bins to be installed at the busy streets of Cordova Centennial Road

There were two parts for the event: first is the installation of 4 heavy-duty trash bins along Cordova Centennial Road; and second, a clean-up drive activity along the same vicinity as a starter to always keep the surroundings clean. The project was targeted to benefit the coastal town of Cordova, Mactan, Cebu.

Youth Takes the Lead: Environmental Stewardship

It was a youth-led environmental activity spearheaded by the hardworking members of BAKA-C.

This event was organized by BAKA-C’s Pillar on Environment and its members. It was well-participated by Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Catarman, SK Alegria, SK Buagsong, SK Poblacion and Alpha Kappa Rho. Strong support was also shown by the local Mayor as well as some private entities.

Kapwa Travel and Kapwa Marketing have been long-term partners of BAKA-C in conducting environmental activities like this. In the past, we have also been a major sponsor of some of their programs such as the Mangrove Planting and Clean-up Drive Fun Run.

About the Clean-up Drive & Trash Bin Project

The program had an early start at 5:00 o’clock in the morning. A short program and ribbon-cutting ceremony were held at the Municipal Ground. There was also the awarding of certificates and picture-taking of all attendees.

Organizers and participants followed the minimum health protocols to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Hygiene kits were distributed which includes a pair of gloves and a small bottle of alcohol. Garbage bags were also distributed to facilitate the efficient collection of trash.

At 6:30 AM, there was a quick warm-up exercise before the actual clean-up drive. Hot lugaw (congee) was also served. Then, the participants were divided into four groups and were dispersed for the clean-up drive.

Each group was ushered by BAKA-C members to designated areas along Cordova Centennial Road. While the sun was rising, everyone was busy picking up every piece of trash, not wasting a single second to gather as much.

It was such a nice thing to see how the youth manifested the spirit of bayanihan (working together) in their desire to do something for their locale and the environment.

Step One of a Long-term Sustainable Project

Today’s event was the pilot project of a sustained eco-activity in Cordova. Ultimately, the project aims to provide heavy-duty trash bins to all 13 barangays of Cordova over the next months.

Today’s chosen venue was the Centennial Road – the busiest boulevard in Cordova which has now become the favorite go-to place for bikers, joggers, foodies, families, friends and the like. Its panoramic location and availability of local food stalls and street foods have easily become a magnet for the crowd. The gathering of people here has also resulted in more aggregation of solid wastes.

Hopefully, with the installation of heavy-duty and highly visible trash bins, residents and visitors will have a stable facility where they can properly dispose their garbage.

Today, we started with one, but it is expected that in the next months, more installations of trash bins will be made on all 13 barangays of Cordova. With the generous support of sponsors and benefactors, this meaningful project can go a long long way.

A Successful Earth Day 2021 Project!

Overall, the event was a success – thanks to the tireless efforts of BAKA-C, sponsors and participants.

Indeed, youths can have the power to spark positive change. Today’s event is only one proof that they too have that strong desire and capability to become great stewards of the environment.

May this simple initiative spark more environmental initiatives at the local level. If the intention is pure, any action, no matter how small or simple, can truly impact real positive change.
