Nestled in Cebu, Dalaguete is a first-class municipality known as the “Vegetable Basket of Cebu.” Its rich agricultural heritage is evident in the lush green fields that yield bountiful harvests. With fertile soil and favorable climate, Dalaguete excels in cultivating diverse vegetables, earning recognition from locals and travelers. This journey promised to unveil the hidden gems of this charming town, offering a unique perspective on its treasures.

Exploring the Dalaguete Trading Center:

One of the first stops on our adventure was the Dalaguete Trading Center. This unassuming hub is where local suppliers gather to store their bountiful harvests, destined for various corners of Cebu and neighboring islands. It was a revelation to discover that Dalaguete is renowned as the “Vegetable Basket of Cebu,” known for providing some of the freshest and most affordable vegetables in the region.

Farm-fresh ‘sayote’, also known as vegetable pear, adds a delightful flavor to a hearty chicken soup. 🥣

The Fascinating Basket Carriers:

However, what truly captured my fascination was witnessing how the locals carried these heavy baskets of produce. These men, with their incredible strength and balance, are responsible for ensuring that these vegetables reach their destinations in pristine condition. In particular, it’s astounding to learn that these dedicated individuals can carry baskets weighing up to a staggering 300 kilograms. This remarkable feat exemplifies the resilience and industrious spirit of the Dalaguetnons.

Unleashing Superhuman Strength: Behold the incredible Dalaguetnon, carrying a colossal 170kg basket of vegetables. Their awe-inspiring power is nothing short of extraordinary! 💪🥦

Two versions of why it was called Casino Peak

Our guide, Sir Victor, shared a cool story about why it’s called a “Casino.” People used to say “Ka-Sino” when asked where they were going, meaning “I’m going to Sino’s place.” Eventually, the place became known as Casino Peak.

Taking a quick break on our way to the peak, savoring the breathtaking scenery.

Another story comes from a local guide who said part of the peak was a good spot for friends to meet and play card games, kind of like a casino. That’s why it got the name “Casino Peak.” The trek is short, only 15-20 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. Even though it’s quick, you get to see beautiful things and learn interesting stories. It’s a must-visit for people who like nature and a bit of history.
